A traditional variety that produces heavy crops of large tasty buttons from early autumn. Plants can be picked over a long period. Prefers rich, well drained, fertile soil.

Sow outdoors in March to April

• In a prepared seed bed
• Sow thinly in rows of 15cm (6in) apart
• Firm gently and keep moist
• When 10-15cm (4-6in) tall transplant to final position with 60cm (24in) between plants and rows
• Firm plants in well
• Harvest in September to December
• Harvest sprouts from the bottom of the stem upwards

Sow indoors in February to March

• In trays of seed compost
• Sow thinly, cover with 1.5cm of fine soil
• Firm gently and keep moist
• Cover tray with glass, polythene or propagator lid
• Keep at approx 13°C
• Seedling appear at 14-21 days
• Remove cover when seedlings appear
• When large enough transplant 5cm (2in) apart in trays
• Stand outside for a few days May to June (avoid frost)
• Transplant to April to May to final position with 60cm (24in) between plants and rows
• Harvest in September to December
• Harvest sprouts from the bottom of the stem upwards
