Spring is the time that most people think of sowing their sweet peas (Lathyrus odoratus) without realising that traditionally, they used to be sown in the autumn for early summer flowering the following year. They will flower from late May onwards. The benefit of autumn sowing, apart from earlier flowering, is in the fact that larger, more robust plants are produced, resulting in better flowering performance. They are quite hardy, and will grow through the winter with a minimum of protection. Try Suttons 'tried and tested' selection - you won't be disappointed!

Sowing Information

For early flowering sow in a greenhouse or indoors at approximately 13-15°C (55-60°F), 3 seeds per 10cm (4") pot, 13mm (1?2") deep. Germination 10-20 days. Acclimatise to outside conditions and plant out in May. Alternatively, sow direct into finely raked, moist, warm, weed free soil where the plants are to flower, 13mm (1?2") deep. Remove growing tips after 3-4 pairs of leaves have developed to promote more flowers. May also be sown September-October in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse to over-winter.
